Great products emerge when passionate pioneers unite for a greater purpose. CocoSip started long before the product launch, with an introduction among like-minded entrepreneurs Srihari (Hari) Ratnam and Michael (Mike) Krychowecky in Las Vegas in 2004. Coincidentally, Hari and Mike were both in Las Vegas with plans to start careers in the emerging new industry of coir; an agricultural substrate made from recycling coconut husk.
Hari hails from Pollachi, an agricultural hub in the district named Coimbatore in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. For 7 generations, Hari’s ancestors have owned and farmed thousands of acres in Pollachi, known locally as the Coconut Capital of Southern India’ and one of the densest coconut belts in the world (70,000+ hectares). Pollachi is nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats bordering the “Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) and well-known for its fertile soil, bountiful water bodies and dynamic farmers. After a stint in the Automative and Industrial Cleaning industry, Hari desired to work closer to his agricultural roots.

In 2010-2020, Hari went away from the conventional coir production methods and created a uniquely controlled processing system that recycles water and reduces time without use of inorganic chemicals. Our buffered coir process is the first to be OMRI certified for organic growing, which is a requirement for companies like large, international berry growers and the cannabis industry who demand both quality and high uniformity / consistency for their sophisticated growing systems.
Collectively, following scrutiny in the United States behind plastic and paper straws, the two entrepreneurs knew they could combine expertise and passion to create the most sustainable, eco-friendly straw from rolled coconut leaves. Months later, CocoSip was born.
CocoSip is more than a product, it’s a movement.
Our mission is to give the coconut leaf one more noble purpose and replace plastic straws before decomposing and nourishing the Earth. In the process, we are able to empower thousands of locals in poverty and without education to work and produce for their families – almost everyone has the ability to gather coconut leaves. Our straws are minimally processed and manually rolled unlike any other straws on the market that require either carbon, water or energy.

Creating new products in India for markets like the United States is no small endeavor. For almost 30 years, we have acquired in-depth knowledge and experience in coconut processing in India as well as vast resources to ensure world standards as production increases.
It all started in late 2024 in a small cafe in Pollachi Southern India when Hari was having breakfast and saw locals rolling up leaves to use as straws. The idea of CocoSip was born, and Hari started looking at selecting the right leaves for strength and aesthetics while creating custom hand tools to straws stronger and reduce of 50% of material required. Working with one of our top engineers, this ‘first step’ process was created with semi-automation in mind to scale production and employing maximum local workers while maintaining strict quality standards.
Once we were satisfied with the straw’s integrity, we tested laser printing machines that will give our straws image branding opportunities to exemplify sustainability and uniqueness. Our focus to offer the consumer a truly sustainable option for straws that is more functional than plastic. We hope you enjoy an extra taste of nature!
